Go to the grocery store and buy RO Water. (Reverse Osmosis) Will cut down algae and algae blooms by alot! Also, maybe some Live Sand and some Live Rock could help as well. Live sand will help cycle your tank ... and LR will help your tank in the long, long run. You need a heater, yes. Buy a good heater, it will be better for your tank then buying a cheap one. Be patient and read the boards ... You will learn and pick up things to do ... and not to do. :)

Where from the ocean did you get the sand from? The sand from the beach or did you dive in to the water off a boat to scoop up the sand from the bottom of the ocean? If it's from the beach, I wouldn't use it in my tank.

In my opinion a thermeter and a heater. Also a good protein skimmer. When I first set up my tank almost 3 months ago I didn't get one because I only had live rock and 3 fish. But about 1 month after I set up my tank I got an outbreak of cyano bacteria. I had to get a protein skimmer to clear it up and it worked. The next day it was looking better already.
I could have saved myself a lot of trouble but just buying the protein skimmer to begin with.
I would also recommend a power head.

I would recommend getting a book like...
The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner
The New Marine Aquarium: Step-by-Step Setup & Stocking Guide by Michael Paletta
Getting a book is the best place to start. I like the second of the two (as a newbie with no clue where to start) because it really shows what exactly (nice checklists and as the title says...step by step instuctions)you have to do and how long things take to get going.

 Thank you all for all the help! First off I got the sand from diving off shore, it was tuff but it paid off. I bought a protien skimmer and I think it helped out already the airation is what is the best I think. MY main man at the LFS. hooked me up he was on vacation for a while but he is back, he is a true fish man, he gave me some damsils that he has had for a long time, just to see if they would due well in the tank, they are stong fish and they have not stressed over anything. I had him test my waters ph and it is good. so right now things seem to be going good, I also bought so drops to help fix the tap water clorine and stuff, it helps a lot I am sure. he also gave me some rock with established algee on it so it will help my tank. I think the tank is doing good for right now, I will watch the fish closely. tahnks for everything.
