If you have any tips whether basic or advanced post them here and help many people out. I can't wait to see wha you guys come up with.
P.S.- there is no making fun of other peoples tips if you already no them.
I think il'l start it off with this:
If your water has evaporated a little from your tank then you just add fresh water you dont add more salt with the water because water evaporates not salt.

DONT put your live rock ontop of your substrate. Make sure it is on the bottom of the tank on like the lighting grate and will not move when you have an engineer goby digging under everything.

what do I do that I now have 80lbs of rock on top of my sand? I tried to dig it down in when I placed it but it didn't go all the way to the bottom.

If you have to ask if it is ok to put a Tang in your tank; YOU ARE NOT READY FOR ANY TANGS.

Basics for choosing a fish at the LFS:
- Ask for them to feed it
- Step back and watch its behavior
- Ask how long the fish has been in the store; avoid fish that have only been there 2-3 days (the major peak in mortality in new fish occurs 48-72 hours after they get to the LFS).
- Watch how the employees catch, bag and generally handle fish

Dont "break in " your tank with damsels unless you REALLY REALLY like them.

Hehe, very good point.
*To go along with that; The most mean and aggressive fish in your tank will also be the one you can never catch in a net.
*Buy Marine Fish
by Michael's and carry it in your car so you don't fall victim to impulse buys at the LFS.

Make sure the tank is cycled before you add anything. Acclimate the fish well you cant acclimate to long. To little can be harmful even deadly. Also test weekly to catch problems early on.

Water changes are a must!! And if you are trying to raise salinity, add salt water for what evaporates everyday until you are where you need to be.
PS. RO/DI water is another must!

Make sure you always do your research before you buy. No matter what the people at your LFS try to tell you, research it first.
No question is a stupid question, ask and the people here will help.

never work for a public aquarium unless you hate fish.
oh and my useful tip. KEEP A TESTING LOG!!! that will help beginners more than anything else to determine the cycles.

Don't use the test strips. And go ahead and buy a test kit. Even though your lfs tests your water for free, there will be a time when you need it tested and they won't be open. (like sundays or holidays)
