fish to tank ratio

There is absolutely no way to give a definitive answer to your question. It depends on many factors including the type of filtration, the amount of live rock, the type of fish you are looking to keep, the type and amount of cleanup crew you have and so on...

Yup thats a million dollar question, usually the cycle will let you know when your overloading.
Ive come to the conclusion that pounds of live rock is inaccurate way of measuring filtration. You have to take in to account surface area. One rock can weight 10 pounds and not have the same benefit of a 5 pound rock.
Skimmers, Bio-balls, refugiums, Rock, Sand, Waterflow, Rate of Water Change, Size of Tank, Size of tank mater, Fish Aggression, Territoral Fish, Clean up Crew, Water Temp. are just a few of what has to go into consideration in your tank.
I will have 10 in tank when completed. All peaceful.
Clownfish x2
Mandrain Dragonet (Spotted and Psychedelic)
Copperband Butterfly
Coral Beauty Angelfish
Firefish (Regular & Purple)
Bicolor Dottyback
Sixline Wrasse
Midas Blenny
Comes to about 36 inches fully grown, so if I went by the inch per gallon rule i would be in trouble. Everything gets along good now i only have to add 3 more of them to the tank.

A good rule of thumb for this hobby is that rules of thumb do not apply to this hobby.
At any rate, the beauty of these forums is your ability to post a potential stock list and get it criticized/fixed.
So click that little fish tab and find ALL the fish you like. Post them and we'll help you from there. However, don't take our word for it. Once you think you have your list, research EVERY fish thoroughly before purchasing.

+1

Post what you'd like, people will adjust your list as it goes...
Anyways, I have a 155G reef tank. Here's my stock list, and future list to help you out:
Have already:
Purple Queen Anthias (2 died :-(... thank you evil angelfish!)
Coral Beauty Angelfish
2 Yellow Watchman Gobies
6 Yellow Clown Gobies (very small)
1 Sailfin tang
1 Green Spotted Mandarin
2 Clownfish
2 Cleaner Shrimp
Will add:
Blonde Naso Tang (if my LFS ever gets one in stock)
3-5 Chromis
2 more Purple Queen Anthias
2-3 Cardinals (not positive about this one)
Midas Blenny
Royal Gramma
2-3 Firefish (if we don't do cardinals)
1 more cleaner shrimp
Of course we have a huge CUC and a great protein skimmer.

There is really no way to determine an amount of fish that is right for your tank. The inch/gallon ratio rule most people seem to preach by is totally false. It depends alot on your filteration and how well it can keep up with the bio load placed on the tank. The more filteration and live rock you have in your tank, the better it will handle the bio load.
