Fish webcam

Well I was thinking about makeing a small box to be able to put a webcam inside my fish tank to watch my fish when i get them. Get a fishes perspective so to speak.
Has anyone tried this? I think its a pretty cool idea im just unsure of some of the tech details.
like lighting distortion from being underwater.also If I was able to have a sealed secure connection to the camera could the cable be submerged in the water without being sealed in plastic?
Im working on plans for a openable sealed box on MS PAINT right now ill post it when im finished. Id love to hear if anybody else has tried this or has any suguestions.

IMO you're better off building a sealed box.
There's a lot of work involved in creating a openable yet sealed box, and being able to seal the cable entry. You'd almost have to use a USB extension that you can permanantly seal in the box, so you can have a jack inside the box to plug the camera into when it's placed inside, but then you have all the coiled up cord from the camera to deal with.
For what webcams cost... $20-50 for basic ones, I'd just seal one into a little acrylic cube for good. If you ever need to use it for web chat, etc, just stick your head in the water.

OR... find an underwater camera... they make them for fish finders and such, and feed it into an analog capture board on your PC rather than modding a webcam.

HAHA!

Im not too big a fan of web cam chatting, Id rather stick my head in there to begin with.
The whole opening sealed box would be a major undertaking so I think Im going to try making a sealed box out of plexi. At the moment I have much bigger things on my plate (failed brace) so maybe next week I can begin on this.

One challenge I forsee is getting the thing to sink... but I guess you could put a couple of large steel nuts, washers, etc in the bottom of the box (inside of course) to weigh it down.

I'd go with the underwater cam idea. We use them a lot for ice fishing here. Don't expect the greats videos to begin with.
As far as a fish's perspective, ummm... aren't you already looking at it through the glass at the same level?

Check out item 220478307500 on that famous site where you bid on stuff.
Put a little propeller on the back of that rig so it moved around, and the fish would think they had a submarine in the area

Heh ya know that thought occured to me too.
does seem a tad bit pointless now.

Could always use it to check that my water is still in my tank while im at work.
