I have read that the successful captivity of the Flame Angel is rare....that it is rare that they survive for more than a month or so. 72 gal fowlr
Anyone have better luck? Opinions?

I have had a flame angel for over a yr. i lost one but it was due to a really mean Wrasse. but my newer one about 3 months now is doing great and growing well. Ive really never heard what you were saying about them myself. but it could have some credability to it. Just not in my case. And i keep mine in a 70 gal reef tank. goodluck!

Completely bogus. I have at least three in 3 different tanks, and the oldest is approx. 4 years old. I once heard a similar observation, but their lifecycle in the wild is about 8 years...There is no reason they shouldn't live at least half as long with the right water conditions and food supply.

Flame Angels are especially sencetive to elevated copper levels. Anything close to, or in excess of 0.15ppm will eat away at their insides. That is why many of these fish dont survive for more than a few months in captivity. If you have a Flame Angel, you should test for copper when you do your other tests.

The name of the book is: A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes by Scott Michael...the quote: "have failed to survrve more than a month; the reason for the mortalities is not known...."
I'm gonna go with the success that you all have had.

it is a great fish, however it should not be your first fish, this fish does need a well established tank, minimum of 6 months. needs loads of LR and algae to graze on, also keep in mind, that they are not compatible with most if any dwarf angel. there are success stories out there, just like anything else, but should definitely not be your first fish. I just dont want to see you come back on another thread down the road, stating he passed away, they truly are awesome fish and Id hate to see you disappointed.

i wanted to get that fish as well, but i read in that same book that they can be agressive toward fish of the same kind, or color, and having a clownfish, i didn't want to risk it. It also said they've been known to eat ornamental shrimp, so i didn't want to risk little pepe's life either.
I don't remember reading that they don't survive in that book, i'll have to check it out when i get home, can't believe i missed that whne i was looking at getting one...
