flame scallop question

What does yours look like? Have a picture? How long have you had it? They unfortunately have very poor survival records in captivity.

Unfortunately, a very difficult animal to keep. The gaping mouth is usually a sign that it is on its way out.
How often were you feeding it?

Yeah, unfortunately, flame scallops do best when they are fed almost daily (unless there is adequate amounts of food floating in the water to feed it that often).

how large is it? They only live 3 years max even in the best conditions, and the larger it is, the older (which is why buying the biggest one in the store is always a bad idea).
Since they generally can starve to death even with determined every day spot feedings, every few days is most certainly not going to cut it.

Very bad survival rate,, belong left in the ocean to live out their short lives,, I even see them LUMPED together at the LFS,, disinergrating as well,, how sad..

I've found that among all the LFS's in my area, you can tell the best ones more by what they DON'T sell than by what they do. Places like Petsmart will sell you things like horseshoe crabs, flame scallops, and so on that are all terrible ideas for most people unless they are super dedicated to raising those animals as they need to be raised. The best store in my area only stocks those fish and inverts which actually do well in captivity and refuses to stock things that may look pretty in a store but die quickly.
