fliter or let the sand, coral and inverts do the rest?

I read somewhere about people just using their deep sand beds, live rocks and all of their little inverts to clean the tank. Is that okay to do, or do you need a filter in your tank?

Just be sure you have enough LR and LS to do this. Many people use protien skimmers with this set up also. But yes, it can be done. :D

go with lots of live rock and a quality skimmer...you really dont even need a DSB. I know my next setup will be a bare bottom or maybe 1/2" for asthetics.

that how ive been running my tank for a yr now. the only filter i use is a sponge in the overflow to get the big stuff out. and a protein skimmer. i have about 80lbs live rock and 2-4 in sand bed, in a 55gal tank. and about 15lbs lr in the sump.

i run lots of rock,sand and a aqua C skimmer. also run a sump/fuge
I run a filter pad on the outlet side of the fuge sump to get the big stuff.
otehr then that no "filter". the tank itself is one big filter really
