We use thhe float off a toilet and before that used a bobber off my fishing pole. Depends upon how big off a float you need :)

Using a float valve on an RO unit is a little more complex than just putting a valve on the outlet. You will also have to shut off the feed, if not, you will build up pressure inside the RO, and the water will be pushed out the "waste" line until the supply is shut off. Coralife and Kent Marine make kits for this. You can pick up the Coralife kit for about $25.

brandan, thanks. i think i have it figured out. i actually need a float valve, and not a float switch. my ro/di unit has a auto shut-off valve, which closes when the di ball valve is closed. i will just replace the ball valve with a float valve. thanks again.

I don't know what kind of toilet float valve you might be wanting to use, but most of them I've seen require pressure to close the valve in them. Your holding tank mat have enough pressure to operate it, but if it's low, with no pressure on the line IME it wont. I personally have tried this with a couple different types and had no luck. Get an actual float valve, you can get one for about 8 bucks. Google US and PLASTICS and FLOAT VALVE. You'll find a good lil valve there.
