I know it's been said before, but steer clear of these things!
A guy I know came into work a few days ago freaked out because he said his water looked yellow/orangish brown, and the fish were obviously stressed out. I told him it sounded like some kind of metal contamination, like rust or something.
Two days later all his fish are dead, and he found the culprit. He leaves a two-in-one hydrometer/thermometer unit floating in his tank 24/7. It had a crack in it, and all the beads in the bottom were completely rusted.
So much lost life and $$$ over something so small.
