Flood Prevention in New Sump

HI,
I'm just getting ready to add a sump to my 55+ and need some advice on plumbing. My primary concern at this point is precautions to take to prevent the possibility of flooding in the event of a power outtage, or loss of siphon in the overflow. I will, by necessity, be using a hang on back overflow. The sump will be a 15-20 gal. tank in the cabinet below the main tank. I will have my protein skimmer in the sump and will be using a Mag7 pump. I would also like to use a dosing unit with a Kent float valve for Kalk. dosing and top off.
Anyway, I've searched this board and read as many of the threads as I can find, but am sort of confused now. Can someone give me a good description of the plumbing system keying on precautions to protect against flooding in case of power loss or loss of syphon, i.e., what kind of check valves, if any, to use and where to place them in the system, as well as any other tips.
Thanks very much.
Tim
