Flow rate for sump

Hi all- The move of the 125 gal tank went great. Just completed the new stand and have 250 lbs of live rock. My questions is- the pump is old and starting to go so I was looking for advice on the flow rate of the water through the sump. I will not have bio media in the sump- predominately used for skimmer and a place to have heater and such. Right now I have an outside hang on overflow and the pump runs about 400 gph.
What is the optimal GPH? 10x the capacity of the tank? What is a good external pump? I was looking at the Iwaki MD55RLT (1080 gph) - too much? Thanks in advance for your help!

10 times is the right ammount for filtering...If you are just using it for skimmer and other equiptment,I would highly suggest a much slower flow rate. This would give the heaters, and skimmers a longer contact time with the water...I have my heater and skimmer running off of my refugium. It has a VERY SLOW flow rate. And have found that they both work much more effectivly now than when they were hooked into the 'high flow" filter loop.....
