Mine did that for about 30 seconds too. I had shaken the Fluval for a bit until it stopped the bubbles, but I don't know why it did. I think it was because I didn't manually pump it very well so there was a big gap in the hose where there was just air. So when the Fluval sucked the water in there was air inside the canister so that's why it kept on spitting air. I think when I had shaken it, I probably filled some air holes so it stopped. Happens all the time when I turn it off and restart it. Hope that helps. :D

thanxs for your reply mine does not consistently do it thought it is probably ever couple of minutes

If you have intemittent bubbles and they continue for days you probably have an air leak on your intake side. Any air bubbles from your tank (air stone) getting into the water intake? You might turn the pump off and see if you get any water leaks on the intake side, like a small crack in the hose or at a fitting/connector. Also check the seal to make sure it is seating properly (would probably have a big leak if it wasn't!)
And try tilting the pump various ways while running to see if that frees up any trapped water in the cannister.
Good luck!

I have used the 303 and the404 and still have them, the 303 will be put in my Mantis tank, but back to your question. I had this similar thing happen and, the cause was from a power head that was aimed directly at the draw tube and this caused the bubbles on mine, a small adjustment problem was gone. Also when I first put the 303 in I didnt have hose fitting screwed on tight enough on one of the hoses and caused micro bubbles , hope this helps. ;)

How does the the Fluval 404 work for those who own it? Frankly, I'm unimpressed. I have had nothing but trouble with the propeller system, it jams, stops, or whatever, causing the motar to freeze up, and, frankly, I don't think the gph is very good.
