Fluval Canister Filters

I am becomming less and less impressed with my LFS stores reccomendations everyday. with fish and such they are great, not so much with hardware.
They are having a sale on fluval 304 and 404 canister filters. According to them they are great and they sell a lot of them, but they also swear seaclones are great.
So, has anyone heard reviews of these, or used them themselves, if so, how do they work, worth the money, or look elsewhere.
I am now in the process of redoing my entire filtration system. Adding an aqua c remora protein skimmer, and a canister filter. the whisper power filter just isnt cutting it
Would Fluval be a good choice?

I have been using a Fluval 404 on a fresh water set-up for about 2 years and i love it. I don't know how they would work for sw.

Now that i read more review's it seems they do not work as well with SW setups, so i guess i will have to build a sump, and use a HOT filter.
Anybody know what size of sump i should use for a 55 gal?
