Fluval Fx5 on a fish only tank

i'm using it as we speak.
quite good filters don't use media tho use carbon and sponges only.
very powerfull input/output aswell so put a mesh around it as it can suck in the smaller fish or the inverts.
i put my intake at the top and my output above water level makes a great water desturber check my thread in "share your aquarium" forum for some pics.
 
yea i was going to put matrix in anyway, and prob. purigen to a whole crap load, I was thinking of doing a sort of "bomie" style live rock formation and was not going to have as much as my other tanks, thats where the matrix comes in

It does what it says it does. I ran a 180 on that for a good while. The only down sides are what you typically see with a canister filter, the rot in the canister. You are going to have be religious with your cleaning.

I'm a newbie to saltwater, but I run a couple of the fx5's on other tanks (and love them), those filters are programed to shut off once a day and purge the air out of the system. Isn't that a problem in saltwater?

Other than it scaring the crap out of you every time it happens no.
