Hi All,
Recently I added a Fluval G6 to my 90 Gal saltwater tank. It has been running for a couple of months now and overall, I am pleased with it.
The one serious concern I have with it is the salinity readings. In my opinion, they are way too low compared to what I get from the refractometer. I also tested some water from my LFS using the same refractometer and values match the stores.
When I got the G6, after running for a week, I thought my salt levels were way too low. Turns out that when G6 is reporting 47-48 ms/cm that my actual specific gravity is closer to 1.03. I am using Tropic_marin Pro Reef Salt with a temp of 81 degrees farenheit.
I contacted Fluval and received the following response. If the readings were not so extremely different I might be less concerned. Are any other G6 users seeing similar disparity?
Please excuse the very long delay in responding to your original inquiry. I am not experienced enough to answer your question and wanted to seek the expertise of qualified individuals. I have been informed that our experts were not surprised that you did get two different salinity readings. Every measuring devise has its own margin of error. For instance, the attached picture shows a reading of a refractometer, that basically is giving the same reading your G6 is reading. Based on the complex calibration of the G6 measuring at all water levels, our experts feel the G6 reading is correct. I hope this information is of assistance to you and again I truly apologize for the delay in getting back to you.
