Well, it depends on how much you want to get into it. I would definately buy my own mask, fins and snorkel. However, if you go on dive trips you can rent all of the equipment. However, I bought mask, fins, snorkel, regulators (mouth pieces for the air), BC (bouyancy compensator), computer(which has your gauges on it), wet suit and/or skins, gloves, light (for night dives). I think that is about all of the important equipment that I bought. I did not buy the tanks and weights, seeing that when you travel to go diving it is just too heavy to carry and you can rent this cheap enough.
I hope you are planning on taking lessons and getting certified, which you have to be in order to rent equipment.
Diving is a great sport, hope you enjoy it.

I agree with ocikitty, over time i have purchased everything but weights and tanks... I started with flippers, and mask, tehn got wet suit regulator gloves ect. ect. ect.... just remember you don't have to get everything at once, as long as you are certified you can pretty much rent whatever else you require

I have seen people that have a snorkel, mast, and fins, and they dive about 20 feet down. It is hard with all the bouyancey.
I have been diving ( with the tank..ect.) and also snorkeling, with only fins, a mask, and a snorkel.
One question: when you dive without the tank, and you just have a snorkel, mask, and fins, do you reccomend diving that way with a snorkel? or kind of like free diving with only yourself, a mask, and fins?

People dive/snorkel, without their tanks, and only have on fins, a mask, and a snorkel. Basically when you only have those 3 equiptment, you are snorkling. I have seen people with a mask, snorkel, and fins only, that dive about 20 feet underwater( only with those 3 equiptment, which means they hold their breath.) I cant dive that deep with out a tank, because the bouyance in the saltwater keeps me up. My question is.. is it easier to dive under with just fins, and a mask. Or with the fins, a mask, and a snorkel? ( i have seen people diving with just a mask, and fins, which i think is called free diving.) Also, how can i get my self underwater really deep with only those 3 equiptment, which are so light?
This might be confusing.. Hope you will understand it. :D

Easier to dive with or without a snorkel underwater? A snorkel isnt going to do you any good under water unless your on surface doing what a snorkel is meant for. Your not going to get to deep either with just that. Youll need some type of weight.

Do you think if i get a metal belt which i can get at a dive shop would work? It is a belt that weighs about..10 pounds.
But i have seen people that go down themselves with fins and a mask.(without any weight). Is it someway how they get themselves under, and like break through the pressure. Maby they are just awsome swimmers..
I have a snorkel that closes when water pressure is on it.. meaning, that if i go underwater with it is closes, so water will not get in, so i would be able to take that down with no problem.
If i were to get that belt, and be able to go down, will it slow me down while going up? or not because of the bouyancy?
Hope you understand. :D

I would never go down with a 10 pound weight and no tank. 10 pounds is a lot and is liable to get you into a lot of trouble(death). Muscle weighs more than fat and is not as bouyant so your personal body mass will determine ease of diving without weights. Mainly people who are diving without tanks to 20 feet are probably going down for lobster, etc. If you are "sightseeing", you probably want to take a tank since you will not be able to stay down very long on your own breath.
If you choose to "free dive" with weights, which is not recommended IMO, be SURE that the weight belt is easy to release and that you practice dropping your weights alot. Also do not put weights in your pockets as this may be hard to rid yourself of in an emergency. BE CAREFUL.

Now that i think of it.. it is not so smart.
I think i will just practice getting down by myself without no weight. I can only hold my breath for a minute, so it will be hard to see much. The problem is.. i cant dive by myself, because i dont have a 5 star diving certificate. Also, i always like to dive with a partner.
One problem is.. i cant even get down a few feet when the bouyance it against me. I think There is someway that they ''dive in'' that gets them to a head start, then they proceed to depths. Any suggestions on what i should try?
Thanks.

People who "free dive" to great depths use a weight that is on a line, basically the weight takes them down and then they let it go and come up on their own. I do not have any suggestions other than try heading straight down and kick. Maybe your kicking stroke is not very strong or the technique is not right. You could probably get some instruction at a local dive shop down there, I am sure there are plenty in Miami area. Good Luck to you and glad to hear that you will not be using weights.

Thanks ocikitty!! :) :D
I am currently in isreal talking from a laptop in vacation, and i will be coming back to miami in a week. I went to the red sea, near egypt... WOW! It is awsome. I went diving, and snorkeling at some beautiful reefs. I brought these questions up because most of the Coral, Clams, Anenomes..ect, are quite a bit down ( 10 feet- 20 feet). That was a great experience though! :) :D

One thing aginst you diving with your breath held is it will make you more boyant. Your lungs are inflated. Even divers with all the gear on can control boyancy with how they control intake.
