Ok that's basic enough. Where do you get formalin? How do you perform the dip? Exactly when is it appropriate to use?Is there a website link(not a bb) to identifying diseases/parasites that maybe has info from experts like TerryB, FMarini etc? anything comprehensive that would help us identify and treat our fish without having to go through a lot of q&a at least inform us enough that we can post a complete question and get a complete answer???

Thanks Ed very helpful, I'll try the book. An lfs had recommended a formalin dip for my coral beauty that had a white spot on it's mouth. Said they sometimes get some cottony disease in/on their mouth. I thought it was pretty toxic but couldn't really get good info doing a search here on another bb so wondered if there was some comprehensive advise floating out there. I did not do one and I'm not going to unless I were to know that was exactly what was needed. Again, thanks! :)

O.K. I did hours of research on this and other sites. Bottom line is you really should not use it unless you really have to. Example: Flame angels... Under stress these angel species are highly susceptible to Brooklynella and Oodinium (Amyloodinium) infections. The former looks like white, clumpy gunk on body and fins, the latter is typical tan to blackish small dusty-dots over the entire fish. In this case I would do this:
do 3 dips of 45 minutes duration every other day.
Using some of the same water the fish came from in a plastic/rubber container add 20 drops of formalin per gallon or if you have a measuring device 1 ml (same as 1 cc) per gallon of water. Also you MUST have an air stone with good aeration in the container during the dip.
I found only one place on the web to purchase formalin: www.petsmart.com of all places! Here is the item: Name: Aquarium Formalin-3 Treatment and Dip, 16 oz
Product Code: 11514
Quantity: 1
Price: $5.19
Again I would only do this on obviously sick fish.
Good luck, Joe.

Well I'm glad I didn't do the formalin dip because the spot is gone. If it was an environmental issue, I'm not sure what, so I'm checking my q tank to make sure all is well. I think it was a stress issue from my tang being agressive to the angel. I've got the tang in the q tank now, so I hope it didn't come from there! Anyway, I'm keeping a close eye on both fish for any and all symptoms. Thanks for the help! :D

O.K. credit where it is due:
All the info I provided on formalin was obtained on this forum from Terry B., Trey, Beth, and yes, you!
The info on the Flame Angel was obtained from www.wetwebmedia.com
Will try to list sources in the future...
Joe.
