Found a good lfs

When adding some new friends for Oscar, I went to the University Pet Shop on 61st street here in Galveston. While the woman who co-owns the store is a complete @#$%^, her husband is extremely knowledgeable about fish and loves to teach his customers new things. When deciding on what fish to get, he spent over an hour talking to me and telling me what would go best with my Oscar, and showing me pictures of these fish. He told me also that Whisper filters aren't worth anything, which I had no idea about. Apparently, they don't clean very well. When I finally picked the Black Belt cichlid and the Albino Oscar to go, I knew I had made the right choice. I would recommend that anyone go there, even though he only sells freshwater fish. He told me he used to sell sw fish, but so many people would come in and then get mad when he wouldn't sell them a big fish for a little tank. They also would come in and buy his fish, treat them poorly, kill them, and then complain that the fish was bad. So he had to get out of the business. A real shame, because he knows so much about fish, both fw and sw. Anyone who wants a good fish store in the Galveston area, I would definately recommend this one. A++++:)

Well, the Whisper filter is insufficient for an Oscar tank, as are, IMO, all hang on the back power filters. However, I do not feel they are any better or worse than most other hang on the back power filter. I've been using them for 15 years, at least....and I think I have one that is close to that old. I have never had to replace more than an o ring. So I disagree with him on that, unless he said it in respect to the tank it is on. You will need more than that in the long run.
Glad you found an good LFS in your area!
