I have only a 50 gallon setup but i have 40lbs of LS and about 50 lbs of LR and I want to know if i can buy the little hippo tang i found!! its only about an inch big its so awesome and ive always wanted one. I know that my tank is small but it is only one inch. does anyone know how long before it would just be too big. because if i can keep it for a year or more and then just sell it back i would do that. Right now in my tank i just have a clown, a yellow wrasse, a hawkfish, and a small goby. Are the hippos hard to keep??

The problem with tangs is the possibility of ich, and hlle. Also how long has your tank been running? A very small hippo would work for a year, maybe 2, but he will definitaly get to big for a 55. If you do decide to give it a try I would highly recommend that you quaranteen the fish before adding it to your display. They also require a good healthy diet to prevent hlle.

While Hippo Tangs are rather subsceptible to disease and will eventually get big for a 50 gallon this is not the really the problem. The problem is Hippo Tangs like to swim a lot and they are unable to do this in a small tank, especially one with a large amount of LR. If you do decide to get it I would definitly reccomend QT'ing as already said.

Just go for it. If you want it, grab it. If it gets too big, sell it back, then get another smaller one. That is a tiny hippo, I know what you mean. It will be a while before it gets too big, I've seen the sizes yer talking about all the time at the LFS. Get it man, get it.
