found my winter beer!

well i have been on a slow methotical quest for MY beer. i had the pleasure of tasting two new (to me) brews.
the first i tried was a german double bock called Spaten Optimator. its a full body beer with 7.2% abv. very malty (that the way i like my winter beers) and clean crisp taste. the aftertaste can be some what bitter but has a sweetness that battles it. the sweetness tends to build upon itself until the beer is gone so the drinkability falls off after a while. but with 7.2 abv you dont need much.
the second beer and now my new fav. is "Samuel Adams Double Bock" this is a sharp clean full body malt bomb that starts and finishes strong. it has a smooth velvet mouth feel and taste of roasted caramels and the use of a half pound of malt per 12oz bottle (almost enough to make a loaf of bread) you can make this a meal at 240 calories. The 9.5% ABV is well hidden within the complex flavors this beer has. every one that would, should try this beer.
Thanks for the forum.

Both are delicious.
The German idea w/ beer is that Winter beers ought to have a higher malt content than Summer beers do. The malt should also be more roasted (the result being a darker and more alcoholic beer.)
I like Sam Adams Winter Lager myself, this time of year.
Optimator is delicious, as is Kulmbacher's EKU28.
My general rule of thumb is the lighter the season, the lighter the beer.

Optimator is pretty good, though from Spaten, I like Oktoberfest a lot, in my top 5 all time. Had on-tap which was phenomenal. I just try EKU28 a few weeks ago and really liked it. It's not freezing here yet, so it's not time for the Samiclaus or Bezelbuth yet
.
Right now, have a Nostradamus and Unibroue La Terrible ready to go

your preferd palate for wine lets me understand the fruityness of the cherry and i can drink it but i really dont like it as much as the bocks, doublebocks, ales, lagers, porters, stouts and hefeweizens that dont have a fruit and the primary flavor. i like the malts, grains and hops to be the primary flavor.
