what is the difference between foundation rock and live rock. . . .is the quality the only difference?. . . .i guess this is my main question, is it ok to start an aquarium with foundation rock and no live rock?. . . cause its cheaper
live rock will have more coraline algea on it, giving it more color, also will have more organisms on it too. i would guess live rock would be better filtration depending on how pourus it is. but i am still new to all this.

It depends on what kind of "base rock" you get. If it is plain base rock then yes you want to do a mix, but it doesn't have to be 50/50. The base I got was cured with live and has beautifull algae growth, but no critters. You can do a 40/60 mix if you want. the base will seed from the live. If you want more growth go for more live. If you are not in a hurry and are looking at cost go for base cured with live or do it yourself.
