might not be enough oxygen in the water try turning the bubbles up on your powerhead and lower the temp to like 78 degrees

Foxfaces can act really weird at times anyway, they will change colors, they will look dead sometimes, and when mine is in camo mode, he seems to breathe a little faster, it might simply be because hes sitting still with no water movement . he will get back in the rocks, stick up his fins and turn all weird colored. but hes one of my favs.! goodluck

Could just be this animals behavior. If the other inhabitants look okay then I doubt it is an oxygen problem. Personally, I think your temp at 80 is good as this helps lower the possibilty of a disease outbreak such as ich. You do need to have good water movement with higher temps.

I am tired of my foxface, im getting rid of him
he never turned fully yellow and he is such a pansy
goes into camo mode for no reasons (there are no threatening fish in the tank
he even goes into camo mode when eating- i think he has mental problems

my LFS just said they were like that. I really hate it actually. Just because i hate the uncolorful colors. I thought it would be nice to have a great bright yellow fish but when i put him in few hours he was in camo mode. well he's looking better now. Thanks for the reply guys.

not all fish require the same amount of oxygen consumption as others. it depends on where they're from and what part and this sounds like he has labored breathing and the higher temps may be good for ich, but for oxygen consumption the lower temps like 76-78 is better.

I seroiusly doubt this fish is going to improve with any lowreing of the temperature. While differnt species require differnet enviornmental conditions, I do not beleive the foxface is suffering from lack of oxygen due to low system oxygen content. He could be suffering from Amyloodinium, as the gulping and difficulty in breathing are symptomatic of either advanced ich or Amyloodinium. If this is the case, lowering the temperature is not a wise move. Amyloodinium loves temps below 77 with 76 being borderline..
I agree you need incraesed oxygen and water movement with higher temp...which is why I said you need good water movement.
Lower that temp and you risk a disease outbreak. Especially if the tank has been running at a constant 80 degrees. 76 could bring on a disaster.
I can assure you symptoms would have surfaced in the six week period if this was purely not enough oxygen in the tank for this animal. Unless there was an enviornmental change, it is either a wierd behavior...or the fish is suffering from disease and trying to backflush water accross the gills. .....which appears like lack of oxgen....because it is...but lowering the temp wil do nothing if diseased.
I strongly suggest you monitor the fish closely. make sure it continues to eat and soak food in garlic and vitamins. Watch for rubbing are darting. I strongly suggest you do not lower the temperature. Make sure you have good water movement with power heads breaking the water surface.
You may also wish to post this behavior in the disease forum. The worst thing you can do is start adjusting your system without a proper diagnosis.
