I know the common plugs, ceramic tiles (small ones), white marble, aragacrete. What's the most cost effective ones you have found?

natural busted up live rock is the best for one reason alone.....
lots of people dont like to buy frags on plugs lol
anyhow aside from that anything really works I generally find calcerous corals like plating motipora, brains, and other sps and LPS especially encrusting or plating types tend to prefer calcerous media to grow on.
but I've grown them on everyting from plastic to glass (you wouldnt believe how easy it is to frag GSP from a glass plate) I have even (I dont recommend this) grown them on coins just to prove (again) that it could be done. I guess thats why old metal ships make great artificial reefs.... LOL

I guess if you were to ever get into Growing/shipping frags you could buy and cure some Marco rock and bust it up for plugs. Ceramic tiles though seem to be cheap too. But like you said, a lot of hobbyists prefer the natural look of a small piece of rock.
