Hi Beth:
I don't realy know a timeline for this disease.
Basically, this disease multiplies in responses to favorable conditions, the more favorable the faster its grows. Therefore its more difficult to put an exact time frame from infection to division. I would say that this ciliate could possible divide at the 18-20min mark. It should overwhlem a fish w/in 3-5 days, its not until the gills, eyes, and skin are highly infected do owner notice the fish struggling.

Note cilia all along the outer surface. X 400.
Brooknella is a ciliated protozoan which resembles its counterpart in fresh water Chilodonella. The protozoan reproduces very rapidly, reproduction occurs by simple binary fission, and such massive reproduction can & does cause fatalities. Usually this occurs in a sick weakened fish.
This disease is highly contagious during all phases of infection/growth/reproduction. Obviously when there is a tremendous number of protozoans present i would suspect the disease is more contagious
Does this help?
