hey guys... so far i have only ventured into the nano world of saltwater but yesterday a friend offered his entire 130gal freshwater setup... the tank is 25 years old but in great condition, he resealed it two years ago. my real questions are... other than getting a protein skimmer and some powerheads, what type of lighting should i get? this tank will not be a reef setup but probably wont even be an aggressive setup either. im planning on live sand and just a little bit of surface live rock, a few large species and then various small fish...maybe some schools, and then some very interesting inverts (like some shrimp/goby pairs). last question.... is a 130gal even worth trying if you live on the 3rd floor???? or do i need ground floor foundation????

well i wouldnt chance it on a 3rd floor. thats alot of weight. its awesome that you got a tank for free of that size. you just cant set it up on the 3rd floor. as far as lighting. if your not gonna keep any corals or anything that really needs light. you can just go with some pc's or maybe even floresents. just enought to make the tank look good. thats all you need.

A nice skool of cromis would look nice, but then again i wouldnt trust a tank that old. Maybe you can have like...a pet snake or lizard in it instead, that would be much safer than having 130 gallons of water exploding on yer third floor and soaking all the way down the building. It wouldnt be a pretty sight. Maybe it was sealed, but........i wouldnt risk it. 25 years....thats ancient, lol

I guess a 55 gallon, but I wouldnt go much better than that. Maybe a 75, or maybe more depending on how old the place is, hos it was built, etc.

people have large tanks set up in houses with crawl spaces. What's the difference in that and a 3rd floor. the flooring system is built the same whether its the 1st or 3rd floor. I would have a structural engineer take a look at it. The big question is which way are the floor joices(sp.) running? you want it to be spread across the joice, not running with them, that will distribute the weight. matt
