i read a post a while back about how bottled garlic juice is no good for an immune system booster, only as an attractant. if you want to use garlic to increase your fishes' immunity, you have to use fresh garlic juice from a recently crushed garlic clove. what do you use (if you use garlic) and what are your opinions?

I use Garlic Xtreme by Kent in my food mix evey other day(about 5 drops). and from what I can tell it works fine I have never had a sick fish plus it brings everybody out for feeding time. I have a few tangs and have never had a ICK problem. The Garlic Extreme is a little pricey but for my .02 I think it's worth it. On the other hand when I make a batch of food in bulk I use cloves.

i forget what they are called, but the anti bactrial properties of garlic dissapate fairly quickly once minced/cruched. bottled garlic is great as an appitite stimulant but as far as actual medical qualities go fresh garlic should be used.

+1 from a medical stand point you want to keep as much of it in tact as possible. That's why I use it in that form to make bulk food.

nah, you take a garlic clove, set it on a cutting board, or tupperware lid, what have you, and using the flat side of a knife blade, crush the clove and squeeze all the juice from the clove. remove the remaining garlic bits, and soak some food pellets in the juice, in the fridge, for 5-10 minutes, then feed. i dont know about the ratio of juice to food when using fresh garlic, but i dont see why it would be much different from the use of Kent Garlic Xtreme which suggests 2 drops of juice to every tsp of food, or if being added directly into the water column, 1 drop/ 10 gallons of water volume. i think if the fish ate a piece of garlic, they would get sick, or die from digestive problems. if garlic is strong enough to ward off vampires, it is strong enough to kill nemo and dori... Eating the garlic would not kill the fish IMHO. There is no scientific proof that garlic in any form directly stimulates any animal's immune system. It appears to entice fish to eat...this gives the fish calories to utilize for all body functions, including it's immune system.
So my vote is #3...'neither'

I use the Kent stuff.
Not sure if it helps the immune system or not, I just know that my fish love the stuff.

I puree the garlic in a blender and mix it with the mysis. I then give it to the fish, garlic pieces and all. My blue hippo expecially loves it. He devours the garlic pieces. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but it has worked so far.

I too have had problems with my blue hippo and ich. The garlic has worked at controling the situation.
