Fresh water dip?

I was needing to know a bit more about this. Howlong should the dip be, and in what kind of water (aside from fresh). Is this a good practice, and what should never be dipped?

Some hobbyist dip new fish and some use dip to help rid fish of surface parasites. Personally, I believe that FW dips are stressful and should not as a rule be generally used. The procedure is to use RO/DI or declorinated fresh water with the pH & temperature brought to the same level as what is in your main tank. Dip the fish for 3-5 minutes.
Do you have a particular problem going on now?

I personally do not believe in the benifits of FW dipping. Better to use a small quarentine tank.
Nothing is full proof, but the stress of FW dipping could very well lower the immune system to a point where the fish contracts the very problems your trying to eliminate.
Main thing with Q/T is to monitor the pH, and Ammonia levels DAILY!!, and change water as needed.

I persoanally DO fresh water dips on my new additions prior to putting them in Quarantine for 1 month. I do as Beth said: dechlorinate, bring up the pH to 8.0, bring the temp to 79-80 and additionally I add a double-triple dose of pure malichite green (want the water to be very blue).
There is much debate (one of the best being the h20ski post on "hyposalinity"... I know Beth you are tired of seeing this recommendation) on this topic and I personally opt to take my chances. I suggest you search this forum and read as much as you can and decide for yourself what fits your needs. Joe.
