IMHO a fresh water dip (make sure the temp and pH are the same as your DT tank) will knock off some ICH, but not eliminate it on the fish and as you indicated if you do not treat the tank the fish came out of and all the other fish you will see it again......Beth has a nice thread on the life cycle of ICH and how to eliminate it in the archives. I had a real ICH problem about a year ago and followed the advice in that thread and on other postings and have not seen any sign of recurrence.

No, your LFS gave you wrong information. Everytime that fish goes back into the display tank, they will get reinfected with ich again.

I 100% agree. FW dips, if not given correctly, will stress the heck out of your fish as well.

Fenner has an article on FW dips, with methylene blue to relieve some of the stress involved in the process. Google it. It will help, but as stated, they will bge reinfected.
I have a question, not to jack, or stir anything up, but just a thought.
If for instance, you did a series of dips, say for several days. With the Methylene Blue and freshwater. Like 1 a day. After each dip moving the infected fish to another tank, that hasnt been infected. Using new but aged water which is matched to avoid acclimating problems. Would this be an effective treatment to irradicate the crypt? From the fish only of course, not the tank it was in. How long would you have to do something like this? I know the dips are concidered stressful, but if the fish could withstand it. I'm not really wanting to do this, but just trying to learn a little more.

There are several problems with this. The first is that not every parasite falls off of the fish durring these dips. The fish would still be carrying some into each tank. The second is the amount of hassel involved in having several tanks set up and maintaining identical levels in each of them. The third is the amount of stress you would be putting your fish through by netting and re-netting, not to mention the stress of the dip itself on the fish. Not all of the parasites would be removed from the fish. In the end you would have several tanks that have been contaminated and a severely stressed out fish that is still carrying ich. Not a good idea IMO. One established qt, a refractmeter, and a little patients is all that is needed to safely treat ich using hyposalinty.
