Frogspawn Question

I love the look of this coral but this site says that they are difficult to care for and I am not looking for anything high maintenance right now. Can anyone give some info on frogspawn? Are they really that hard to care for? What kind of lighting and flow do they need?

Really? Thats good to hear. I have noticed a lot of beginners having frogspawn in their tanks so I really didnt think that the info from this site was right. I will have 546w of T5 lighting and 2 koralia (850gph) powerheads in a 125 gallon tank. Do you think a frogspawn will be ok in this light and flow?

give it as strong light as you could.
give it medium flow.
give it Calcium at 420
feed it with phytoplankton once a week (not target feed, just in tank in general)
good water quality.
easy to keep, low maintenance.

Im still confused about the whole calcium thing. Does it come in a liquid and you drip it into the tank like a buffer? Or is it a solid that you place in front of your filter or return pump? How can you control and how do you know the amount of calcium you are putting in your tank?

there's no magic about Calcium level.
the only way you can tell how enough is enough for your tank is to run tests very often and write down on a 7days cycle.
Everyone's tank is different. Some have tons of corals, some have only a few.
Do about 3 week tests continuously, you should be able to figure out how much ur corals consume calcium and dose ur tank appropriately.
There are several types of Calcium additives. I use SeaChem liquid bottle. I mix 1 capful in the top off water and drip it.
Some people like to use the powder kind. That, you have to desolve it in a 1 gal s.w. bottle and drip it in ur tank slowly.
Don't add any chem. directly into the tank. corals will get kill if concentrated chem. go directly into the tank.

It will do great with that.

regular water changes will take care of all mineral replacement unless your coral collection is really high.

It's great to see that you're researching, Kevin. WTG!!
My frogspawn is definitely one of my favorite corals in my tank...and it looks like my male fp clown thinks so too. He's made a little get away in the frogspawn...well, ok, it's not far from his 'shrooms, but still.
Calcium is a definite with these corals. Regular...and I mean, regular water changes will keep them healthy and happy, along with feedings as stated in other posts here.
Good luck with your new tank. What size are you getting? Post pics when you can, 'kay?

Hey Lisa
, I am getting a 125 and I will def start a tank diary once I get it. I have decided to do weekly 5% water changes and have told that would be good for a 125. Will I still need to add calcium with a weekly water change or will it stay at the right level by itself?

someone above said it, the more coral, the more mineral consumption, its really not difficult, like anything else you get into a routine. Big difference between keeping something from dying and having it thrive. You are really doing it smart by doing the research first.
Dont maintain individual corals, be famililar with thier general needs and maintain the TANK. Coral placed for thier likes and dislikes for flow and lighting but levels will be great for entire group if you keep tank balanced as a whole. JMO

just me, but Kents liquid is my LEAST favorite. It just seems so weak it would be far too expensive. I would go through a bottle a week to try and keep my levels high enough. I shoot for 450 solid. I do use alot so i like powers added to my top off dripped overnight. Which ever you go with you I am sure will make it work for you and build a routine once you have your needs established.
We all have our favorites but I like Kalkwasser, and also Bi-onic 2 part.
