Frogspawn?

I just bought a single head of FS, my first one. I noticed after acclimating it, it's shedding slime? I assume that's normal for the first time after being placed in the tank. I have it placed on the bottom of the tank, medium flow, water params are good. Is that normal?

it looks fine from the pics. just make sure it expands when the light comes on. cant really tell whether its a frogspawn or hammer from the pic.

thats hammer coral BTW

You serious? The local LFS had it labeled as frogspawn. I thought it looked kinda like a hammer. It does not have the "frog eggs" look to it. But, that's ok. I always wanted a hammer coral. At least they sold it at a low price, compared to what I've seen hammers go for.

Yep, thats a hammer. And yes, it will expel strings from time to time. Mostly, when handled. They like moderate current, and high lighting.

I should say though that you should start it out lower, then move it up after it has adjusted to your tank.
What type of lighting? Similiar to the store, or brighter?

I always wanted a Hammer. Yes, it was in lower MH lighting @ my LFS. I have it housed in a 90g reef w/ 2x250 MH 12000k and 2xT12 Super Actinic's. I have it not touching the sand, but in between a few rocks above the sand.

did the lfs sell it to u at a frogspawn price or at a hammer price..hammers usually cost more...anyhow..i just got a hammer last week..it did the same thing when i placed it in my tank..i placed it in the middle of my tank. since it came from a 300g tank with 400w MH..and i have only 250w MH on 90g. so i didn't really light aclimate..but now its doing great..looks better and opens up even more then when it was in the 300g..looks awesome swaying in the currents. Urs will be fine..

Thanks Aquaguy! Yea, my LFS sold it to me @ frogspawn price, only paid $30 for it. I know hammers go for twice that..I will see how it does today and update with a pic. Thanks for all your help guys..

You may want to light acclimate it, since its going from low to higher lighting. Just move it up to the spot you want it over a period of 2 weeks or so. If youre going to keep it in the lower half of the tank, IMO just put it in the spot.

For these types of corals, it's best to keep them on the bottom of the tank, cause they can be aggressive towards other corals, correct?

Looks really good, just keep it there if you like the spot its at. They adapt to almost any kind of light, but do like high light best. Good luck with it.

Thanks nwdyr!
You know, I'm really considering T5's. I heard a lot about them, and my MH's are way overdue for bulb replacement. Anything to lower my electric bill would be great too!
What's recommended for a 90g for that kind of lighting? I do have 2 T12 super atinics, which need replacement too.
