Some advantages of using a refugium & sump over not using them:
Increases total water in the system.
Sumps a great place to put your heater(s) - out of sight.
Overflow in display skims the surface of organic oils/crud.
Increases water circulation in the tank.
Sump's a good place to do water changes / top offs / dosing / running activated carbon occassionally.
Other filtration equipment can be placed in or connected to the sump such as a protein skimmers - if desired.
Refugium's allow a safe haven for pods to grow and reproduce.
Macro algae can be grown in the fuge, and harvested for excess nutrient export.
Marine plants/macros in a fuge can be lighted 24/7, and may help even out the tankwater's natural pH swings.
Increase gas exchange in entire system. CO2 / O2 balance.
A sump is relatively boring, but a refugium can be fun to watch evolve and grow.
There are more advantages - these are some that come to mind.
I like sumps and refugiums - and feel they add a lot of enjoyment to the hobby.
Many folks are sucessful without having either a sump or a fuge.

fuge's can also be a good place to put a troublesome animal, you can put them in it before you can get rid of it so it doesnt cause anmore damage
and a question, im making a 55 gallon fuge, can i put mangroves in it, ive had them before and they were great!
