You don't need any substrate, but you can use crushed coral or sand. Live Rock would be beneficial.

IMO the mud stuff is just another way of getting $30 out of you. I'd go barebottom or with a shallow sand bed.

I used mud, and have been extremely happy. I got the mud/grunge from the bottom of the live rock tub at my lfs, paid maybe $10 for it. I also cleaned out the rubble tub and actually got many critters and creatures along with it.

maybe after the mud has been in someone's tank for a while, it might be beneficial, but miracle mud right out of the jug is garbage. i saw a study done on it, and the result was that there was nothing in it that suggested it came from the ocean.
i bought some and found pieces of red brick and some shiny plastic/glass shards...it's from someone's backyard.
use some sand if you like.

Actually, miracle mud is about 75% Oceanic mud, and it is collected from different parts of the ocean,(mostlikely from volcanic areas) the remaining 15% is a trade mark secret.
.
Mud,
Its mostly silicon dioxide in the form of quartz.
The problem with the mud is the abundance ofhigh levels of impurities and metals such as but not limited to: aluminium,copper,zinc,titanium,iron,phosphates,nitrates.magnese,ect....
