Sorry to say, but flower pots are a hard coral to keep. They are very delicate and should be left for the WELL expereinced aquarist. I too have got one of these to find out the hard way how hard they are to keep. :(

These corals are extremely difficult to keep alive for more than a few months. Unfortunatley I bought one of these for $12 when I first started out but it died after my sebae clown used it as a host a few weeks ago. A lfs had them for sale and recommended them. These are better off left in the wild unless they are provided with the perfect conditions.

To answer your question, yes, Goniporas often display that behavior, not sure why though, may not be normal in the wild, but Ive seen it countless times in captivity. Im with the others in that they are very difficult, if not impossible to keep, at least to date. But now your stuck with it, so provide it with good light, and feed it often. HTH

Looks like your gonipora is in distress and may be suffering from malnutrition.....as mentioned these corals can be difficult to keep. In most cases they tend to wither away in home aquariums with little understanding as to why. Little is available as far as reliable info on keeping them long term. I do keep one that has been in perfect condition for over 6 months now....fully extended polyps and it even appears to have grown about 20% in size since I introduced it. Below is a link with information I used to set-up conditions that I believe have provided mine with conditions that hopefully will allow mine to stay in good health long term.
gonipora success!?!
For me what has worked so far is a refugiumsystem that produces a huge pod population and no skimmer to remove nutrients that may be a food source....plus I add DT's phytoplankton in larger doses than most folks use. Information seems to indicate that lack of proper food source may
contribute to the decline of these corals in captivity.....hope the info helps yours recover!
