Hi, I was on a business trip in PA and decided to stop at a ***** - they were having the 1$ a gallon sale. So I bought a 40 gallon breeder. Now I always wanted to get a Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, would this tank be suitable 36" long x 18" wide x 16" high. I read up just briefly on these fish on this forum, have to do alot more reading. What do you all think.
Thanks for now!

What about lighting - we have a shop in town hydroponics and they have some T5HO light strips that are reasonable. I would like to try some of the microalgae’s that I have seen in pictures from posts in this forum. I would probably just put in some base rock make a nice sized cave and ledges. What other fish would be compatible with a dwarf and this size of a tank. I am going to build a sump out of a 10 or 20 gallon tank that I have. What size pump would I need 250 GPH ????? Also would some mushrooms be alright with a dwarf?

They prefer low lighting but will do fine if they feel secure with hiding spots. macro algae will be fine, they are fine with corals. The safe bet is fish that wont fit in their mouth, but I have some fish with mine that it could eat and it pays them no attention, like a six line wrasse and tail spot blenny. But every fish is different and they could wind up a meal, especially if they are not fed enough.

Thank IbanEz - any good reading you know of

Frank Marini's new book. Lionfishes and other Scorpionfish. It's a great read.
He also has other articles online if you google Marini and Lionfish.

You can also google "hix scorpionfish" for a scorp care article, much of which applies to lions, and contains a link to a good feeding article.

What would a typical water turnover rate for filtration be for these little beauties. I am going to go with a sump on this tank, either a 10 or 20 gallon.

I wouldn't be afraid of a 500 gph pump for that system. You can split the return, or even better, use a SCWD (you'll want at least a 500 gph if you use the SCWD to minimize loss). I've been a big fan of the SCWD's ever since they came out and use them on most of our non-AIO setups that have sumps.
The key is to be creative with your flow so it's not plastering your fish against the wall, and have some areas where the fish can leave the higher flow if it wants. You can also bleed some flow back into your sump if need be like this:

Thanks saxman and IbanEz - I will definitely cover the tank - I have a 9 year old, he is really good with fish and understand that lions are venomous, I just don't always trust his friends. kids for some reason always think they have to touch fish. saxman 500 gph - SCWD what does that stand for again - closed loop??. I am going to start drawing up this tank and get some feed back from here - really excited about lions - just going to take my time and hopefully do this right. Thanks for your input so far.
