I was at the lfs w/my daughter the other day and they had those new glofish. I thought they looked like zebra danios injected w/dye but the employee tried to say they don't put dye in them. Anyone?

From what I read they do indeed inject dye either in the eggs or the fish itself. The walmart stores around this part also carries them......

Hummm how would they do that? Unless it's like chickens, people have injected food coloring in the shells to make the chicks hatch different colors, but soon as they loose the down the feathers come in natural. Do you think they can do that with the fish eggs??

Don't quote me, but we carry the "red" ones which actually look pink, and the new "green" ones but they look yellow. I don't exactly know how they get their color that way, but I think my boss told me that they are gentically engineered and the guy that "created" them has a patent on them? Tell me if I am totally off base. I will definately find out from him for sure on Tuesday.

Quote from Google search:
GloFish® fluorescent zebra fish were specially bred to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a natural fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists hope to one day quickly and easily determine when our waterways are contaminated. The first step in developing these pollution detecting fish was to create fish that would be fluorescent all the time. It was only recently that scientists realized the public's interest in sharing the benefits of this research. We call this the GloFish® fluorescent fish.
Do you have to add a fluorescence gene to every fish before it hatches?
No. Today's GloFish® fluorescent fish are bred from the offspring of fluorescent zebra fish that were originally developed several years ago to help fight environmental pollution. Each new GloFish® fluorescent fish inherits its unique color directly from its parents, maintains the color throughout its life, and also passes the color along to its offspring

I have a GloFish! Its in a tank with 3 other regular zebra danios. Its really neat looking, hot pink! I heard they were injected with dye, but couldnt see how that would be feasible. Genetically engineering them sounds a bit more like truth...I guess thats why they are $6.00 each when regular zebra danios are 3 for $1.00!

Many fish are injected with dye, those aren't. Painted glassfish would be one that is. It's basically a tattoo.

I'm sorry but that is pushing it! I don't like the "painted" glass fish or any fish that are injected or lasered. The glofish don't bother me so much, but I think it is so cruel to inject something with dye for our viewing pleasure. That goldfish thing you just posted it totally over the top.

They do that with Parrotfish as well. The parrots that are painted usually end up dieing of a mysterious skin disease that isn't a fungal or bacterial infection. They get discoloration (usually white) then start swimming funny and eventually die. No medicine helps, they just suffer then die. I have seen it now with 3 different people who bought painted parrots and the symptoms are the same each time. I KNOW it has to be from the injections!
Alyssia, the glofish are very cool little fish and they are not injected

Maybe I will let Lindsey get one then if they aren't injected. I feel so bad for those poor painted glass fish when they have all that cottony white stuff on them.

Sep, do you still have a FW tank? I'm thinking about putting mine back up.

BTW they ARE danios :jumping: with a high price tag, but not injected. Someone( I am too lazy to look at who.......... posted above) posted that they are indeed breed to be that way, but breeding and cross breeding is natural, they have no ill effects from it, set your daughter up with a fw tank, go on do it!!!1

She already has two tanks in her room...I'm thinking of setting up another one for me. I want to have glass catfish again, they are so cool looking! Plus I like the look of the aquatic plants.
