Garlic Extract...What does it do?

I suspect some ich and LFS told me to soak all food in garlic extract for the next week or two, before trying anything else. I know it's used as a flavor enhancer for not-so-good eaters, but does it really do anything for the health of the fish, or ward off any ailments?

My thoughts exactly...or possibly it makes their breath stink so bad that diseases run the other way.

When I use garlic I only use fresh cloves that I grind into a paste and mix it with the food and let it soak awhile. From what I have read, a lot of the bottled stuff you get at your LFS loses some of it's effectiveness over time.

Thanks...good links and info. Looks like it does have it's good uses, and it does appear that the fresh would do much more good than this $11 bottle of liquid that the lfs sold me.

I feed my fish a cube of mysis shrimp and brine shrimp every evening with about a 1/2 cap full of garlic guard. I put it in a small cup with fresh tap water, microwave for 45 sec. with the liquid garlic, stir it till the cube melts and feed to the fish. Since I have been using this I have had no ich, or parasites on my fish. It works for my tank. LOL

Thanks salth2ofun. That's the same brand (Garlic Guard) that my lfs sold me. Good to know it's working for you.

It doesn't do a thing.

If you want to use garlic in a meaningful way, then it needs to be fresh garlic. Take a look at the info in the FAQ Thread.

Beth...I have read that, and I'm convinced. But I am going to finish out this $11 bottle of Garlic Guard, if for nothing else "flavor". After almost a total wipe-out, I'm down to only 3 fish, so it's hard to tell what the heck is working and what's not. But from all of your data, fresh is the only way to go.

Hey...I'm just gratefull that "Beth" has posted to one of my threads.
Not trying to sound sarcastic...It doesn't take much research to tell that you are a pro at this, and to be respected. Thanks for your input. I'm sure I'll need some more advice soon. I study your past posting often when I have a problem. Thanks again & don't stop.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm really just a fish tank lover like everyone else, certainly not a pro. I learned a few things about diseases over the years just because of my own big blunders, so if I can share a bit of info and spare other hobbyists many headaches, then I've done my job here.
