Ok i have seen garlic meds on here. This may be a stupid question but does it have to be a special garlic or can it be something i can buy at the grocery store. The reason i am asking is that our LFS doesn't stock any garlic for fish. Also someone mentioned hyposalinity or something, can anyone tell me what that is? I have a coral beauty that appears to have ick. Is vitamins or garlick the answer or should i buy a small QT?

You will need a QT tank if you plan on utilizing any type of meds. For ich, I recommend one of the copper-based solutions (don't use in the main tank EVER!). I'm sure you can blend your own garlic from the grocery store and soak some food pellets in it to make your own garlic pellets.

Hyposalinity is lowering the salinity of the water to less the that of natural sea water. The specific gravity of 1.009 is recommended with the temp. being at 79-82 degrees.
Make sure you accurately measure the salinity. Use a refractometer not a swing arm because if the salinity is too high, it wont work and if too low, you can endanger the fish. This should be done in a QT tank because only fish can handle this treatment. It will kill inverts. Also make sure you lower the salinity gradually to give the fish time to adjust. This should take about 2 days to do. Once your at 1.009 the fish will need to stay at that pg for 4-6 weeks.

One trick is to take your swing-arm hydrometer to a local college campus' biology department. The staff will more than likely calibrate your hydrometer against a glass, floating hydrometer.

Garlic proponents suggest that a substance contained in fresh garlic extract, Allicin (Diallyl thiosulphate) acts as a "blocker" to chemical cues used by the Cryptocaryon parasite to recognize its potential host.
A cut and paste from an article and I totally agree with it based on my experience.
