Garlic Question

I have a blue hippo that has a little ich. None of my other fish have it. I've had the hippo about 6 months. I added a purple firefish and six-line wrasse to my tank two weeks ago after QT. I'm not able to catch the hippo and I'm afraid if I did and put it in my 29g QT it would be more stressed. My cleaner shrimp was cleaning a little the other night. I've also started adding Kent Garlic Extreme to the food I feed at night. I heard you can add the Garlic directly to the water also. How much and how often? Thanks.

Forget about adding garlic to your tank directly-you'd be wasting your time. Get some Zoecon or Selecon and soak some food in it and feed to your tang along with the garlic(IMO i never found garlic to be very useful). Feed your tang selecon soaked food everyday and hope he kicks the disease. Hopefully your cleaner shrimp will make a difference, but ultimately you should put him in a QT tank. I would rather lose 1 fish than an entire tank.

Garlic does work better if added to food rather than directly into the tank.
However, the package instructions for Kent;s Garlic Extreme do suggest adding 1 drop for every 10 gallons of water. I used to do this but I rarely do anymore. I know that Beth frowns on this practice.

I'm doing both and the hippo seems to be improving slowly. I can't catch it to QT it so I guess this is my only option at this point. Not sure how it got it. None of the other fish show any signs at all. keep your fingers crossed.

"Improving" could just be that the ich is evolving into another stage of the disease process. In most instances, once a fish has full blown ich, then it is not going to recoup with anything except stand treatments for ich.
Use fresh minced garlic rather than store prep. Works much better. And do some serious soaking with fresh garlic juice. If the fish will actually eat tiny bits of garlic mixed with food....even better. 3x a day in food after soaking in fridge for 30 mins. Do direct target feeding to ensure min. time of food soaked in garlic in the tank water. Don't soak in dry foods. Use frozen, or even better, fresh seafoods.
