Gate vs Ball Valves

I am in the process of putting my plumbing diagram together before going out and purchasing the parts. I am wondering if there is a difference betwen using a gate valves vs ball valves to regulate the water flow both to and from the sump. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks.

Ball valves by their very design have better flow control characteristics over any gate valve.
Globe valves on the other hand, have better flow control characteristics over most every all valves.
We're talking your standard PVC stuff you would buy at most any home improvement store.
For our hobby - most any pvc valve will work.
