June 29, 2010: House Disappoints by Failing to Pass Extension of Emergency Unemployment Benefits
Washington, DC – Congressman John Lewis, 5th District Georgia, who voted in favor of the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act, H.R. 5618 is extremely disheartened that his colleagues on the other side of the aisle failed to support the bill. The legislation that would have extended unemployment insurance (UI) benefits for hundreds of Georgia residents through the month of November was defeated with the House’s failure to pass the measure by a two-thirds vote.
"I voted in favor of this extension because this is an emergency," said Congressman Lewis. "There are tens of thousands Americans who are facing the threat of being unable to not only meet their financial obligations but having to choose between their mortgages and food because some in this Congress lacked the compassion to support this measure."
"I find it unconscionable that the same Republicans who refuse to give the nearly 2 million out of work Americans the assistance that they need citing reasons of fiscal responsibility were not fiscally responsible in approving the supplemental legislation that funded the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," stated Congressman Lewis.
"I also find it morally reprehensible that these same Republicans are not fiscal conservative when it comes to tax cuts for the wealthiest 10 percent of Americans. It was a Republican Administration that took us from a major surplus to an unprecedented massive deficit. At that time we heard no calls for fiscal responsibility," added Congressman Lewis.
"This Congress has a moral obligation to offer its citizens help in their time of need. Today we failed in that task. It is cruel and insensitive to inflict this burden and add to the suffering and pain that America's unemployed citizens are feeling because of the loss of their jobs through no fault of their own," remarked Congressman Lewis.
Excuse me Mr. Lewis, last time I looked there only needed to be 219 votes to pass a bill in congress. The democrats in congress number 255. Why are you yelling at the republicans?

I don't really like not voting to extend benefits because around here there are lots of people who can't find work, can't sell their house and definitely can't afford to move to find work either and are barely scraping by. While at the same time we have no problems giving foreign aid to other countries or giving a warlord type criminal a couple million in Afghanistan or Iraq to stop shooting at our people while they are trying to build a school or get electricity going. My priority would be to help Americans first if I was in congress.

What a concept...you mean something like:
"You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye."

You understand that the country is out of money? You understand that for a few future generations, read your kids and grandkids here, will be paying for what is being BORROWED now? We cannot continue this spending when we do not have the money for it.

I do understand that, but I think there is enough wasteful spending going on still that instead of punishing some poor family who got screwed over by the banks and Wall St, maybe the priority should be elsewhere when it comes to not spending money. I might be mistaken, but as American's we can work our whole life paying into this system, so if government spent it elsewhere, like in Iraq, why is that the problem of somebody who is unemployed. Congress set a record pace to come to the aid of the uber-rich in the banking industry after they caused all this, what is the difference? I also helped my neighbors out by hiring them to put an addition on my garage after their contracting business dried-up, which gave them another month to make other plans and get a trailer to live in at their sons place. I would have just gave them the money, but despite being broke they would not take charity. I could not really afford to help them, but I did anyway, I wonder how many of those congressman voting no on the unemployment extension would do the same, my guess is not many.

All the Republicans are asking for is a little financial responsibility.
"Republicans offered to support the unemployment bill if it was paid for with unspent money from last year's massive economic recovery package. Democrats rejected the offer, saying the money was needed for jobs programs."
Too bad they didn't think this way when they ran the show

Actually we will be only paying the INTEREST on what is borrowed. Near the point of no return when it comes to debt.

Ahh gotta love it.
District 5 is Fulton county, home of Atlanta.
Most of this state is conservative, exept of course fulton county, where all the government moochers live. Of course, fulton county also sucks up gigantic amounts of state funds and resources, leaving the rest of us in a lurch. (I live in southern district 9)

It is funny how that works. The rest of the state ends up paying for the crap 1 or 2 counties need. Personally I think Bill White had a re-election plan. Import all the democrats from New Orleans and get them to vote him back into office as mayor...
