i did, infact i got 3 and one died. damsels are very hardy and good cycling fish. i think the one that died was sick to begin with though.

DO NOT use firefish or clownfish to cycle a tank. There is no point in killing a fish. Just use a raw coctail shrimp from the grocery store.

I did both. In the past i have used damsels and it took a long time for the ammonia to spike. My last setups i first put raw squid in untill the ammonia spiked then waited for the ammonia to go down a little and added damsels. I have never lost a fish durring cycle.

use reverse osmosis water with reef crystals or instant ocean and use damels here a trick do a 50 % water change and use saltwater from a store u trust that cuts out cycle time i hate damel they have temper and they are hard to get out of a reef but when you start they are easy to keep alive try blue green reef chromis it a damel but a little nicer live rock help alot to cycle your tank be patient for 3 to 6 months water is very important to your tank use olny ro water also use phos gaurd by sea chem it help with algae hope this helps pease

I'm going to resort to begging... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not use live fish of any kind to cycle your tank. Even if they do survive the ammonia spike, it's just cruel to put them through that kind of stress. :(
Your live rock will help jump start your cycle and there is no reason to add live fish when you can just put in a raw piece of shrimp and accomplish the same thing.

Don't Rush It,
I waited about seven to eight weeks of cylcle time. I found that it was well worth it. I still have a very young tank. But My fish is looking Great! :)
I still remember that fealing when I tested my water and I was able to get my first fish. :D What a great fealing.
I also remember the when he was in shock for the first three days and almost didn't make it.
I know now that these aquariums take time and patiants. I may still be a newbie, but I'm certain patiants will be a virtue.
Have fun and Stay well,
Milo

Why do people continually promote Damsels to cycle a tank?
There is a better way, and it's cheaper, and more reliable, and it doesn't kill a fish. Just use a dead shrimp...
If you don't care about killing fish, please find another hobby.
We can argue all day long about whether aquarium keeping is good or bad for the environment, but you cannot justify harvesting and killing damsels because you are too impatient to look at an empty tank for a month or two.
