If you need a top you could use ceiling tile. You can get it at a hardware store and it covers your top, while also letting it breath.

I think you mean lighting egg crate.

Plastic egg crate in the lighting dept from Home depot works well and it lets the tank breathe. Measure and Cut (i.e. break ) too size.

It is generally better to have an open top for a number of reasons, free gas exchange, heat reduction, no light reduction. Egg crate may be needed if you have jumpers. Egg crate would count as an open top.

The egg crating I am speaking of is no more than 5/8 in openings. Lets the excess heat out and keeps the inhabitants of your tank.....in.
