should i use a glass top.right now i dont have a lid will having no glass hurt my new mh 250w.ikeep my pc right on the tank iwill keep my 3 mhs at 8 inches.but should i get a glass lid for tank
I have a lid and I am topping off every day, I was thinking, "holy crap imagine I had no lid." I will always have a lid. Also keeps water from splashing on lights and potentially cracking them. Hot/cold thing.
as fedukeford said a lid will not allow proper biological gas extange between air and your tank water a topless tank will always have a better chance of being healthy
off! when i first got my mh i had a top and my tank had this air bubbles stuck all over lr(lack of oxygen) as soon as i took the top those bubbles whent away. just make sure that you don't get water splashes on bulb cause it will burnt out. at 8" from water you shoud'nt have that problem..
Another alternative to reduce the evap rate and maintain good surface gas exchange is to lower your water level by a couple of inches from the top and use a canopy with fan/s at each end, one pusher and one puller drawing airflow across the surface. If you install a duct (not pictured) in front of your exaust fan inlet you can reduce the evap rate even further. Since water molecules are heavier than air they will coalesce and will fall out of suspension quicker if they have to make too many turns, the water will simply drip back into the tank through a drain hole drilled in the base of the duct. The airflow will still be sufficient to provide a good gas exchange.
