glass tops and canopy rust

Several months ago I stopped using my glass tops on my tank and just the canopy. I have been happy having done so, but now I am having problems with the hardware on the wood canopy rusting. I can easily replace most of it, and seal it with silicon this time. I don't have any ideas for the hinges other than just replacing them.
My main concern is the hinges. I am planning an upgrade soon to a 180 Oceanic. I have emailed them and they have minimial metal on their canopies, but the hinge can rust if glass tops are not used.
So my question is, does anyone else have this trouble, and is anyone using an Oceanic canopy with no glass tops?
I will have a sump with the new set-up, so using the glass tops may not be a problem, what do you think?
Thanks

jond,
not having the same prob as you since i use a lightfixture complete and ditched the canopy on my 72 bowfront work out eaiser for me, as far as your hardware issue goes here is what you could do get new brass hardware and then look in the phone book under plating and see if u can get someone to nickel or chrome plate it for you this should help in regards to your rust problem

Jond,
You can go with brass hinges, but dont bother getting them plated. The brass is ok by itself and the plating will just wear off in time. The best way to go would be to use stainless steel hinges. It doesnt matter whether you have the glass tops on or not because the hinges they use will rust no matter what.
