Global Warming

Well, with all this stuff going on these days about global warming i figured i would start a thread.
What i dont understand is why Americans think that we are the "axis of evil" to the environment. The human race in general. I mean yes, our carbon emissions and such do add to global warming... think about this, more CO2 emissions were put out in qa single Mt. St. Helen's eruption than cars in America have ever done, and are not supposed to do for a few thousand years. Now think of every volcano in the world, and how many times it has erupted...
We also blame humans for retreating glaciers and rising sea levels. ICE MELTS! i mean, you cant stick an ice cube in a freezing cold bath tub and expect it to last forever. And you know what these glaciers do when they melt? add to the sea levels rising. Erosion does that too. I think erosion causes most of the rising sea level issue. I live on a lake, and every year i need to pour sand onto the support beams because everything gets washed down. Think of that on a larger scale in every ocean there is. Basic science. If you have a jar, and put rocks in it, the water level rises.
I want to know our thoughts on global warming, and how humans effect it.

I have to say your question is skewed (though kudos for not insisting on a yes/no answer). The question is global CLIMATE change, not global warming. The global warming definition is a misunderstanding and IMO short sided term that media and such have clung to...the question is "is there man induced global climate change." And I would leave the bit about everything's going to die out...because I believe in the other crazy thing, evolution...that there would be speciation and extinction. But overall it impacts the answer to the question (it is another question on its own)
JMO

My hope is that this thread could remain productive, though it is definitely not the first discussion. Everyone: please refrain from name calling, broad sweeping (and insulting) generalizations, hot button comments such as the "bush defenders" and other things likely to incite a riot and are not really pertinent to the question. etc. It won't be perfect
but let's try..

IMO it is impossible to keep politics out of a discussion of global warming or whatever you want to call it since it is so politically driven, much like abortion.

I can't believe this is still debated. Hands down GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL....IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR BILLIONS OF YEARS!!!!!!!
As my weather professor in college said the first day of class until the final exam. The climate changes every year, so you would have to be pretty dull to think that anything is NORMAL!!!!!

I'm with the ol' per-fesser on that. The bigger debate should be is it being caused by humans. IMO it is not, at least only a drop in the bucket compared to the amount that is caused by nature itself. In which case there is little or nothing we can do about it.
As to the poll, the world is heating up in places & cooling in others. And, everyone is not dying. I know lots of folks who are alive.

Yes, there is global climate change.
The question is, is it caused by human activity.
I do think there is a great deal of politics in it, and discussing politics is fine...but name calling and broad brush insults are not. Then again, relying on such tactics often shows a weakness in the argument and inability to deal with facts, science or even sound political philosophies (which IMO can be used to defend either side).

IMO:
Global climate change has, and still does, exist. I would be exceedingly concerned if all of a sudden there was no variability at all.

we are the 'axis'. the climate could take volcanos and such. but us coming in and using so much energy and not giving back to the world is destroying it. it's like alchemy on video games.
"To get something, something of equal value must be exchanged." thats the laws of alchemy in games.
for example. we use so much energy and cut down forests so quickly. lets say we cut down 50 forests a year. we plant 5 forests a year with nature organizations. not much equal exchange going on?
IF there is ALTERNATIVES that don't involve endangering the environment, tell me ONE good reason why we are not using them? biodeasol. hydrogen cars. geothermal heating. solar energy.
i rest my case.

meh, the questions on the poll werent the best. i do indeed believe global warming is occuring, but i don't feel human beings are the sole cause.

more trees doesn't mean more natural forests for actual healthy environments to be in.
no offence, honestly, but if you think humans have nothing to do with global warming, then you are a complete idiot.

Obviously, try to understand the no name calling, etc.
If you have to resort to name calling, you must not have the confidence, evidence, etc to support your opinions....that is all it tells me.

I love when people post something insulting but begin by saying "don't be insulted but..."
This is exactly the kind of comment Ophiura was referring too, and exactly the kind of rhetoric that leads to nowhere.
Zeke, can you explain the fact that Mars and other planets are also experiencing global warming?

I'm not sure which forests you are referring to, but here where I live, west central Louisiana, logging is the largest industry. It has been so for many generations, yet there are many trees replanted, many currently growing and no apparent let up in the amount that are harvested. Trees, contrary to some opinions, are a renewable resource. They are another part of the debate wherein the facts have been misrepresented.

White Mountain national park in NH is 1000 sq miles, and 40 years ago it was bare ground from logging. now covered with trees. I dont see deforestation happening.

Oh boy.
Are we really going down this road again? I swear my fingers are starting to develop muscle memory to refute such arguments.
