I have had 2 scooter blennies which have both died, now I want to try a goby which ones are recommended, for a 50g, 1year tank. If my blennies died would I have the same problems with goby's not getting food?

what do you have in your tank? if you have enough room you should get 4-5 firefish they are gobies and are very funny when in groups they chase each other around and do other wierd things

do you have lr, and what type of substrate(nad how much are you using), scooters really aren't that hard, just when you feed them(if thereisn't food for them in the tank), you have to get the food to them, we use a turkey baster, and brine shrimp, and litterally shoot the frozen brine at him, some food will shoot back up, and the other fish will get fed too, but the scooter can get food,
firefish are really neat, but either get 1,2 or 6 or mosre, eventually , they will become a problem if you have more than one, unless the are mated and or have plenty of them to spread around the abuse(6 or more, and no one will take too much, they all get the bullied effect evenly) otherwise they will eventually kill all but one off
another neat fish is the blue gudgeon goby, and beautiful, but most gobies are easy and have their own cool qualities IMO
good luck and i am glad to see that you are concerned about overstocking
try searching google for salt water aquariums, then search within results for compatibily charts, that may help you alot in your decision

The only goby that I am experienced with is the golden headed sleeper. All you need to do is to have live rocks. Normally once it gets into the aquarium it will dig a small cave under the lr for its home. And it cleans your sand really well. It literally cleans your substrate by eating them in some way. They will put it in their mouth, and eat the unneeded stuff and let the sand out of its gills.
For those who are experienced with firefishes do they behave the same way as the golden headed sleeper? Because they are relatively smaller than golden headed sleeper, so can anyone explain a little?

The dimaond goby does a real good job of cleaning sand by swallowing a big gulp of it and then spitting it back out.

I have a yellow watchman goby. He is the easiest fish I have ever seen... but he is not the brighest! Anyway, you do not need live rocks or anything fancy - just some hiding places for them. They are not the most fascinating fishes (in my opinion) but they are easier to take care of (in terms of food) than blennies. They are funny too.

firefish do not sift the snad( at least we never saw ours do this), but they will burrow under rock, or a shell or something to make a den, or possibly even a nest, in which to hide when the lights are out

I have many little gobies in my reef . Red head cortez gobies gold striped (parasite eaters) Blue stripe , Gold headed /Sleeper goby, citrin Clown goby. They are all small and are a benifit to the reef in some way.
Then I do have a Yellow Watchman and a Mandarin.
I love small guys that are always moving.

We have a yellow watchman goby that I think my husband spoiled by feeding flake food and shrimp, he barely ever sifts sand any more, but he is my fave fish in the tank!
