going for a DIY stand and canopy

So I have decided to go nuts and test my wood working skill.
Does anyone have a good instructions, diagrams, style choices, best wood to use etc etc that I could use for ideas or my plan.
My concern about the canopy is if I close the back to much what about lighting cables out hang on skimmers, etc. I guess I have to plan ahead? or can I leave the back totally exposed.
What about fans for PC lighting? Will I need them?
Thanks for any help offered!

I left the back open. It lets air circulate and keeps temperatures down. I used birch and made sure to waterproof it of course. A fan is built into the light box back.

Oops. Forgot to mention I used oak as a stand. It's a good strong wood and is attractive.
And, my other tank which isn't shown uses PC's. They don't give off as much heat as the VHO's but if you have enough of them a fan wouldn't hurt to lower any heat given off.
