gold striped maroon doesn't look very maroon

Just got new very cute gold striped maroon clown today. I understand all about why they don't have the gold stripes until they're older. But my question is this- Should he be a very definite maroon color? For everybody out there that has one or has seen one, would you describe the color as maroon? Or is this like the stripes- the color develops as he ages? Right now I would describe the color as a medium orangish brown. Sorry, no camera. Would appreciate any input. Thanks!

I have two maroons. I got them when they were about a 1/2 inch and they were a distinct maroon. I think you got taken.

I have had acouple of these and have found that at times when they have not been properly fed they will lose some of the richness of the color and get some fading but never to an orange hue. You probably have a percula.

I've seen maroons from orange red to a deep almost black red, does it have cheekspines? All maroons will have those so go check.

I forgot to mention I'm seeing him under regular fluorescent lights- he's in quarantine. He's less than 2" long, and I couldn't see good enough to say for sure if he has cheek spines or not. But I have seen perculas in LFS and his coloring is adifferent shade of orange than they are and also darker. His fins are shaded even darker than body. I hope when I get him in DT, his coloring will be distinctive. Thanks for the help. I'll be watching for those cheek spines as he gets bigger!

Juvenile maroons are not maroon. They change color from orange w/white stripes to maroon w/goldish stripes after about 1 year.

Keep an eye on his coloration. He may just be a little stressed right now. Keep him in qt for a full 3 weeks if you see no sign of a parasite.
