I am new to the marine world by 2 months, but I am not getting any answers to this. I bought LR, and it has alot of mushroom shaped, so I am told "rock anenamones" on it. The base looks like a mushroom, the mouth area is clear, and it is light tan with outreached tenticles. I feed them invert food and vitiamins, and hand feed shrimp pelets. I was told that they are bad for your tank and will take it over, by one person and the other tells me they are ok. I see alot of little babies all over in my tank. Please help I dont no if I am feeding a problem or what??

what you are calling a rock anemone is actually called apistia and the are a critter that can sting and do alot of harm in a tank when left inchecked they also reproduce rather quickly and thats not a good thing around corals it comes in contact with. most people get ride of them the best that they can. there is an anemone that is called a rock/flower anemone that gets rather big but looks like a big sunflower and looks really good. http://www.geocities.com/mickadee2002 you will have to cut and copy this link into your browser but the picture on the right is the rock/flower anemone. do a search for apistia and find a picture of them and see what youve got.

I my experience, whoever told you that the aiptasia are good, don't listen to anything that guy tells ever again. If what you have in your tank looks like the pic above, and you see lots of "little babies", you're in for a hell of a fight. Espacially if you've been feeding them shrimp and vitamins. That only sped up the reproduction. I would go purchase a dozen peppermint shrimp and sic them on the aiptasia right now.

Skooby, is the pick Nosmada conveniently posted the anemone you are referring to? If so, then it is bad as said, otherwise, it may not be that bad. There are several types of rock anemones, and I think some are bad while the others are not as much.

That is exactly what they look like. I took the main rock out and put it in quarentine. I am going to buy 12 peppermint shrimp tomorrow. Thanks alot. I would have thought this pet store would have known what they were. They charged me 35$ for a piece full of them, and it probably weighed 1/2lb. Oh well Live and learn. Thanks again.

If the peppermint shrimp don't work try a Racoon. I read that they love to eat Aiptasia and are great for removing them from tanks.

Yes a rac. butterfly fish is much better than an actual raccoon, which im sure would not be please to be in your living room put to work cleaning your tank.
I also just read in a magazine last night about a new product that comes with its own syringe that you inject into the mouths of the little buggers, and it kills them off in like a day. The add says it has no copper or other things bad for your tank, and that it is safe for all corals, inverts, and fish, but I am going to remain skeptical until I hear of someone else using it first. Aparently they just die and drop off to be removed by hand, or to be safely eaten by some shrimp.
If anyone has used a product like this i would be interested in hearing how it worked, and how the health of your tank is afterwards.
Good luck with them.
