Thank you all...Apache was just such a magnificent little horse, and I loved him!!
Theresa, yes, his death was due to pouch emphysema which was recurrent. He was able to bear 1 brood of babies, but after that everytime he and Navajo mated, his pouch filled with air and nothing else. He would swim upside down because of loss of bouyancy, and he wasn't able to hitch during those times. I was able to evacuate his pouch for him when I thought the time was right, and he would be fine for a few days. Unfortunately (or fortunately...depending on how you see it), after he was fine and comfortable for a couple of days, he and Navajo would mate again...it was really a vicious cycle that he wasn't able to snap out of this time...stress and exhaustion, I suppose.
I miss him terribly...
